On a local level, the GFWC First Coast Woman's Club was founded in 1997 by a group of women who had been long time affiliates of the GFWC through their membership in the GFWC Junior Woman's Club of Jacksonville. These women saw a need to establish a GFWC club to meet the needs and concerns of the more "mature" (yet still busy) volunteer woman. It was a natural progression for our club to assume the sponsorship of the Miss Senior High Scholarship Pageant, when the Junior club decided not to continue with it as one of their projects.
The Miss Senior High Scholarship Pageant is the only fundraiser of the GFWC First Coast Woman's Club, but it is not our only project. Throughout our short history, we have been involved with issues in our community such as domestic violence, education, environmental concerns, women's health, and youth leadership development. We fund several scholarships each year and financially contribute to other organizations that are committed to serving people in need. Our goal is to educate ourselves and others on the crucial concerns in our area, and assist when we can to make our community a little better place for all it's citizens. Miss Senior High now will compete in the Miss Florida Scholarship Pageant of the Miss America Organization as "Miss Northeast Florida".
